Plot summary
Lena Malley, a Polish immigrant, works as a cleaner at Heathrow Airport. Her coworker Birdie helps her clean the toilets and introduces her adopted brother Elbie, who is mute and also works there. Lena mentions she lives alone and has no contact with her family. When Lena misses her bus, Birdie suggests they walk to her house so her dad can drive Lena home. At the house, Lena is knocked out and injected. She wakes in a child's dress, tied to a chair, hearing screams from another room. Mum and Dad introduce themselves, and Mum says Lena must obey if she wants everything to be okay, then injects her with a sedative. Lena wakes tied to a frame, and Dad tells her she is now part of the family and must follow his rules.
