Plot summary
Sarah Palfrey, a genteel widow, moves to London to start her life over and to be less of a burden on her daughter. She takes a room at the Claremont, a retirement hotel whose brochure promises more than the building offers, and settles in among the residents. Her family is all but absent from her new life. An accident outside the basement flat of Ludovic Meyer, a young writer, brings the two of them together. They find they share more with each other than with people of their own age, and their talks carry Mrs Palfrey back through her past and Ludovic toward his future.
