Georgina Hale
Biography
Georgina Hale was a British actress whose six-decade career took in stage, film, and television. Born in Ilford, Essex, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1965. She made her professional debut with the Royal Shakespeare Company and later did repertory and West End stage work, including a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Steaming. Her film debut came as Betsy Balcombe in Eagle in a Cage (1971), and she appeared in Ken Russell's The Devils (1971) and The Boy Friend (1971). Her performance as Alma Mahler in Russell's Mahler (1974) won the 1975 BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. Later films included The Watcher in the Woods (1980), McVicar (1980), Castaway (1986), Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont (2005), and Cockneys vs Zombies (2012). On television she had roles in Budgie, The Strauss Family, and T-Bag. In 2010 The Guardian listed her among ten great British character actors. She died in 2024.

Early training
As a teenager, Hale studied Stanislavski's method at the Chelsea Actors' Workshop in London while working as an apprentice hairdresser. She later got into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1965.
Getting ready for a role
Georgina Hale appeared in The Watcher in the Woods (1980), a film starring Bette Davis. Admiration for Davis was largely why Hale accepted the part of that character's younger version.
A first
In May 2006, for the Beckett Centenary Festival, Hale played Nell in Samuel Beckett's Endgame, staged by Charles Sturridge at Dublin's Gate Theatre and then London's Barbican. It was her last stage part.
