Plot summary
Wu is a Chinese patriarch who arranges a marriage for his daughter, Nang Ping. She is lively and spirited, and his old tutor has educated her. She lives inside her father's palace, kept from the world. There she meets Basil Gregory, a young Englishman staying with his family. Basil's father is a diplomat who shows no respect for Chinese ways and insults them openly. Basil tells Nang Ping that he must leave for Britain with his relatives. She answers that she is expecting his child.
