Plot summary
Stan Ross is the star of the Milwaukee Brewers, and he retires the moment he records his 3,000th hit, in the middle of a playoff race. Over the next nine years he builds a fortune on businesses named Mr. 3000 after the nickname. When the Brewers retire his number, he learns a clerical error from a suspended game counted three hits twice, so he actually finished with 2,997, which has also kept him out of the Hall of Fame. At 47 he wants three more hits. A team executive brings him back during September roster expansion, but younger players see him as a disgrace, manager Gus Panas will not speak to him, and Rex "T-Rex" Pennebaker says he is too old. Sportscaster Maureen "Mo" Simmons covers the comeback.

- Richard Gere was once in negotiations to star in Mr. 3000, reteaming him with Touchstone after Pretty Woman, a film that had itself ironically begun life under the working title '3000', referring to the price Gere's character paid for Julia Roberts' character's services.
- John Travolta was in negotiations to star in and Callie Khouri to direct the film in 2002, but Travolta ultimately turned the role down because he was tied up doing promotional work for the airline Qantas.
