Plot summary
Vivian Carter is sixteen and lives with her mother Lisa, attending Rockport High School. In Mr. Davies's class she sits with her best friend Claudia, notices that her classmate Seth has changed over the summer, and meets Lucy, a new student. Lucy's critique of The Great Gatsby draws an argument from Mitchell, the star jock. Later Vivian watches Mitchell take the soda Lucy is trying to buy and spit in it; when Lucy reports him, Principal Shelly avoids penalizing him. Through Lucy, Vivian begins to see how casually the school treats sexism. A crude list from the jocks humiliates several girls while the boys find it funny. Going through Lisa's belongings, Vivian finds her mother's old feminist zines, and they move her to publish Moxie, an anonymous zine that calls out how girls at the school are treated.
