Jude Keffy-Horn is sixteen and lives in Vermont with the mother who adopted him, Harriet, and her daughter Prudence. His father, Les, is a permissive hippie who grows and sells marijuana in New York City. Jude and his closest friend Teddy spend their time taking drugs and imagining a move to the city. Diane, Les's girlfriend, has a daughter named Eliza who takes a bus north for New Year's Eve. Jude and Teddy meet her at the station and bring her to a party, where Jude is beaten up outside. Eliza and Teddy talk, and she gives him cocaine. Teddy asks Eliza to check on his straight edge half-brother Johnny in the city, because Johnny has no phone. She gets on a bus back to New York.
