Plot summary
Kate has raised her nine-year-old daughter, Beth, in seclusion, and the two of them share an isolated farmhouse in the woods. Hal, a police officer, stops by from time to time to check on them. Beth hopes that her father, Brad, will come for her ninth birthday. Brad was sentenced to prison two years ago for the murder of Beth's friend Courtenay. One evening a husband and wife, Lewis and Mary, break into the house. They are Courtenay's parents, and they are not convinced by the evidence that pointed to Brad. They want answers from Kate about what happened to their daughter.
