Plot summary
Pat Morita, the actor best known as Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid, is the subject of a documentary built on the memoir he left unfinished. That account begins with his childhood fight against spinal tuberculosis and the years he spent confined to bed, moves through his start in stand-up comedy, and follows his career in Hollywood, where he met discrimination as well as acclaim. Performers and others from his working life add their recollections. The story also takes in his addiction to alcohol and drugs, which he hoped speaking about openly might help others with, and the project grows out of an earlier documentary about a friend from The Karate Kid and gains momentum with the success of the series Cobra Kai.
