Plot summary
Moondance Alexander is a teenager whose father has died, and her mother, Gelsey, keeps a close watch over her through a summer she expects to be uneventful. She finds a lost pinto pony named Checkers and returns him to his owner, Dante Longpre, a gruff and mysterious man. Moondance believes the pony has hidden talent as a jumper and wants to bring it out, so she persuades Dante to train the pair for a jumping show. The Bow River Classic puts her up against her rival, Fiona Hughes, who rides a fancy horse named Monte Carlo in the jumping competition.
