Trailer

Plot summary

A squad of soldiers has vanished in the desert, and Captain Natalie Artemis takes a United Nations security team out to find them. A sudden storm pulls the unit through a portal into another world, where humans share the land with large, savage monsters. They come upon the burned wreckage of the missing squad's vehicles. Then the Diablos, a horned monster that travels beneath the sand, closes in, and bullets and grenades do nothing to stop it. The survivors take shelter in a cave, while the Hunter, a warrior trained to kill such creatures, watches the group from a distance.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Monster Hunter (2020)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Just after the Chinese release on December 4, 2020, a scene in which Jin's character answers the question "What kind of knees are these?" with "Chi-knees!" caused an uproar on social media; viewers read it as the racist chant "Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees", and the film was removed from circulation and censored online.
  • An early draft built the story around a young adult character from the real world called Lucas, sought as the hero to drive the monsters back; as the script developed Anderson dropped the young adult concept because the genre had become overused in Hollywood, turning instead to the premises of Avatar and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
