Plot summary
Halloween is a day away, and D.J.'s parents are leaving for a convention, which puts his teenage babysitter Zee in charge of him. Across the street lives Horace Nebbercracker, an old man who takes the toys of children who come onto his property. When D.J. and his best friend Chowder lose a basketball there, Nebbercracker collapses during the confrontation and paramedics take him away. Bones, Zee's boyfriend, drops by and remembers a kite of his that Nebbercracker confiscated. When D.J. and Chowder go back to the yard, they find that the house itself is alive, and Jenny, a girl selling candy for her school, is caught up in it.
