Plot summary
Napoléon Bonaparte lives out his final years exiled on Saint Helena, held there by the British and kept under the watch of the governor, Sir Hudson Lowe. A group of loyal officers stays at his side, and they look for a way off the island; Napoléon regards this time as his last battle. Lieutenant Basil Heathcote, a young British officer posted there, is caught between his duty and his fascination with the captive emperor. He also watches the friendship that grows between Napoléon and Betsy Balcombe, which the governor views with hostility.
