Plot summary
Claude Garcia, sixteen, is a pupil in Germain's literature class at a high school. Germain, a middle-aged teacher, has taken the boy on to tutor him in writing, and the two have grown close. Claude has found his way into the home of Rapha Artole, a classmate, and the essays he hands his teacher describe what he sees there: Rapha's mother Esther, his father Rapha, and the family around them. The boy is precocious and disdainful. Reading each new piece, Germain finds his enthusiasm for his work coming back, and he is drawn into the story his pupil is telling.
