Paul Meurisse

Biography

Paul Meurisse was a French actor who started out as a solicitor's clerk in Aix-en-Provence before moving to Paris, where he took small performing jobs in revues and nightclubs. He soon found stage work, playing a silent part in Jean Cocteau's Le bel Indifférent, after which his theater and film activity was continuous. He acted in popular comedies by Marcel Achard, André Roussin, Françoise Dorin and Jean Anouilh and in classics by Shakespeare and Shaw, and his time with the Comédie Française company lasted 27 months. Henri-Georges Clouzot cast him as a cruel, obnoxious husband in Diabolique (1955), and he also appeared in Picnic on the Grass (1959), Marie-Octobre (1959), Army of Shadows (1969) and Le Deuxième Souffle (1966). Georges Lautner's parodic spy films gave him the part of Commandant Theobald Dromard, called Le Monocle, in The Black Monocle (1961), The Eye of the Monocle (1962) and The Monocle (1964). He died in 1979.
