Plot summary
The Interviewer lost her standing as a journalist and is now depressed, staying by herself in her parents' big house while they are away. She begins a podcast about unsolved mysteries, hoping it will bring her career back, and asks people to call in and tell her their stories. A story about a black brick takes shape. Floramae, a maid, is the first to report one, and other callers describe similar objects turning up in their lives. Klaus, a German art collector, has gathered several of the bricks and arranged for tests on them. The accounts she collects from each caller shape her episodes.

- Monolith was shot in the Adelaide Hills over 15 consecutive days, in the same order as the events in the film. The entire film was shot in one location, with Lily Sullivan the only on-screen actor; Damon Herriman, Erik Thomson and Kate Box are among the voices heard on the telephone.
- Monolith was the first feature film made under Film Lab: New Voices, a joint South Australian Film Corporation and Adelaide Film Festival initiative. The 11-month development lab took three projects, chosen from 63 entries proposed by 49 teams, and picked one script for production.
- Lily Sullivan, the film's only on-screen actor, said her role was the "challenge of a lifetime" and called it "terrifying", describing how she approached the solo performance like theater: "I've never been more aware of my voice".
