Plot summary
The staff of a mental institution near New Orleans mistreat Mona Lisa Lee, and she endures it without speaking. She has a telepathic gift, and she turns it on the workers to break out. On the streets at night she drifts past strangers, a few of them menacing, until a policeman, Officer Harold, tries to take her into custody; she makes him fire his own gun into his knee. In a fast food parking lot she finds Bonnie Belle, a single mother who dances at a strip club, losing a fistfight, and intervenes. Bonnie brings her home, and Mona Lisa grows close to the woman's son, Charlie.
