Plot summary
Rob Pilatus grew up in a broken home and Fab Morvan left an abusive household before the two met in Munich, where few Black people lived. They became friends quickly, worked as dancers, formed a pop duo of their own and grew long braids. Frank Farian, a record producer, offered the pair a contract; Morvan says they understood only after signing, without reading the paperwork, that they would lip sync to tracks recorded by other singers, and that breaking the deal would mean repaying his advance. Farian's business partner and then-girlfriend, Ingrid Segieth, says no pressure was needed and the two were glad to take part. Her nickname gave the group its name, Milli Vanilli. An album released first in Europe reached American listeners as Girl You Know It's True.
