Plot summary
Shot at the Coliseu dos Recreios during the January 2020 Lisbon dates of the Madame X Tour, the film presents the concert staging of Madonna's 2019 album. An opening montage of newspaper clippings and clips from her music videos moves through misogyny, sexism, ageism, racism and bigotry. A line from James Baldwin opens the show, and a woman at a typewriter sets off a dancer's flinches with every keystroke. Madonna sings "God Control" while being pushed between police shields as dancers are attacked under news footage. "Dark Ballet" carries Joan of Arc references and gas-masked dancers. "Human Nature" follows, with pointing fingers cast over the stage, and a bongo solo with eleven women around her.
