Sidney Fox

Biography

Sidney Fox was an American stage and film actress who worked in the late 1920s and 1930s. Born in 1907, she moved to New York as a child and by the late 1920s was studying acting. She spent time with a traveling theater troupe and then appeared on Broadway in It Never Rains in 1929 and Lost Sheep in 1930. A Variety critic praised her lively performance in Lost Sheep, and Universal's production head Carl Laemmle Jr. signed her to a multi-year contract. Her movie debut came in Bad Sister (1931), which also introduced Bette Davis. Advertisers named her a WAMPAS Baby Star that year. She starred as Camille L'Espanaye in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) with Bela Lugosi, and in 1933 she acted opposite Feodor Chaliapin in the English-language Don Quixote. Later she often took bit parts in B-movies, though she starred in School for Girls in 1935.
