Spike Jonze
Biography
Spike Jonze, born Adam Spiegel, is a director, photographer, actor, and musician from the United States. As a teenager he shot BMX and skateboard photos for magazines, helped start the youth publication Dirt, and made skate films, among them Video Days (1991). He then became an in-demand director of music videos, working with acts such as R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Björk, and Fatboy Slim. His first feature, Being John Malkovich (1999), brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. He followed it with Adaptation (2002) and later directed Where the Wild Things Are (2009) and Her (2013); for Her he won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay. He co-created and executive produced Jackass and co-founded Directors Label. He has acted in Three Kings (1999), Moneyball (2011), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).

About the name
Spike Jonze got his professional name as a teenager from Mike Henderson, the owner of a Bethesda community store, who nicknamed him after the satirical bandleader Spike Jones.
A change of course
Jonze was working at a Rockville BMX store at 16 when Freestylin' Magazine editors Mark Lewman and Andy Jenkins, impressed by his photos, hired him as a photographer, prompting his move to California.
About the name
Jonze created an alter ego, Richard Koufey, who heads the Torrance Community Dance Group. This urban troupe puts on performances in public spaces.
Behind the camera
Jonze produced Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut Synecdoche, New York in 2008, a film he had originally intended to direct himself.
