Plot summary
On 15 August 2021, American forces are leaving Afghanistan and Taliban fighters are taking Kabul. Hundreds of Afghans crowd the gates of the French embassy hoping to get out. Ambassador Martinon is flown by helicopter to the American base at the airport, while members of the DGSE and embassy staff stay behind. Mohamed Bida, who runs the embassy's protection, drives through the city looking for Sediqi, an interpreter who worked with the occupation forces. He sees insurgents turning on civilians and journalists, among them Kate, a reporter whose camera is shot after she questions the Taliban's treatment of women. Bida persuades Martinon to let the civilians inside, among them Eva, an aid worker of French and Afghan origin, and her mother Amina. When the first air evacuation is blocked, Bida opens talks with the Taliban about moving four hundred refugees.
