Plot summary
Mara has taught writing at a Toronto university since graduation and has not written much of her own in years; her marriage to an experimental musician is in trouble. Matt, a former best friend from her past, turns up on campus; he now lives in New York City and has published a successful book, and his father's illness has brought him back. The two fall into each other's company again over cafes and walks around the city, and Matt's notions about art press against the life Mara has settled into. When her husband backs out of driving her to a conference in Ithaca, Matt goes with her instead.
