Plot summary
Marie and Bruce live through one day of a strained marriage. The evening before, Marie lost her temper over the sound of her husband's typing and sent his typewriter out the apartment window. Now she addresses Bruce with sarcasm and contempt, narrating her hatred, while he answers with hollow terms of endearment. Bruce leaves for lunch with his friend Roger, and Marie is led by a Golden Retriever through a door onto a grassy field, where she falls asleep and is woken by the dog's licks. At a party the host greets her and the other guests mostly ignore her, while Bruce moves among them and makes her jealous. Tired, she stays in her chair, drifting between dreams and the conversation around her.
