Plot summary
Soorangudi, a Tamil Nadu village, is divided between two caste-based camps, the Northerners and the Southerners, each led by a son of the president who has long held the post unopposed. A brawl at the opening of a public toilet leaves the president paralyzed, and with the election months away, his sons Rathinam and Mathi cannot settle on which of them should take his place, so both enter the race. The MLA, who needs him for a work contract, sees the vote split down the middle. Smile, a homeless barber of the lower caste, lives in the village with his assistant Kirudha. At a post office, lacking any ID, he applies for one and is advised to take the name Nelson Mandela. Once the voter ID arrives, the two brothers compete for his support.
