Plot summary
A Force Recon Marine, Benson Payne returns from a drug raid in South America to learn that he has been passed over for lieutenant colonel and given an honorable discharge. Civilian life goes badly: he applies to a police department and ends up arrested. His former commander, General Elias Decker, gets him out of jail and arranges a new posting. Payne reports to Madison Preparatory Academy in Virginia and takes charge of its JROTC cadets, a disorderly squad of teenagers who have finished last for eight straight years at the Virginia Military Games. He shaves their heads, moves them into a run-down barracks, and clashes with school counselor Emily Walburn, who wants a gentler approach.
