Plot summary
After a bank robbery, Félix Leca's gang lies low at a riverside tavern in Joinville, on the edge of Paris, in the Belle Époque. Raymond, who once served a prison term alongside Georges Manda, introduces the carpenter to Marie, a golden-haired woman of the demimonde known as Casque d'Or and unhappily attached to Roland, a violent man in Leca's outfit. Marie and Manda are drawn to each other immediately. They dance, and when Roland tries to bully him, Manda floors him with a single punch. Roland's jealousy builds, and Leca, who also wants Marie, waits for her answer on whether he may buy her from Roland. Manda comes to the gang's Paris bar, L'Ange Gabriel, to take her from Roland.
