Plot summary
Mike Lane lives in Tampa, where he works several jobs. The one that pays best is dancing as the star attraction at Xquisite, a male strip club owned by Dallas, a former stripper with plans for an empire of clubs. Mike would rather design and build custom furniture and open his own business. On a construction job he meets Adam, a naive nineteen-year-old living on the couch of his protective sister Brooke. Mike brings Adam into the club and offers to look after him in that world, a promise Brooke accepts only reluctantly. Adam is slow to warm to the work, though Dallas backs him too.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Matthew McConaughey's stripping number as Dallas was not in the original script. He asked for one, and he, music supervisor Frankie Pine, and his own guitar coach Martin Blasick wrote the song he sings, "Ladies of Tampa," in three hours.
- Alex Pettyfer's first strip scene as Adam had no planned choreography; it was his own idea to bare his backside, and he did not know in advance that the music would be Madonna's "Like a Virgin," sung by Nashville singer Chris Mitchell.
- Music supervisor Frankie Pine originally planned to use Kid Rock's "Cowboy" for Adam's cowboy-themed number, but when that fell through she substituted Big & Rich's "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" instead.
- Matthew McConaughey took the role of Dallas over the phone after Soderbergh pitched him the story, laughing and accepting within ten minutes; it was only the second time in his career he had accepted a part by phone, after a Richard Linklater film.
- The film is loosely based on star Channing Tatum's own past: he worked as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida, when he was 18 years old.
