Madame Bovary (1991) on Netflix

Plot summary

In 1850s Normandy, Emma, the romantic daughter of a farmer, marries Charles Bovary, the local doctor, a kind and conscientious widower with little to say. An aristocratic ball leaves her more dissatisfied than before, and her husband moves them to a bigger town. There the apothecary becomes his friend. Emma meets Léon Dupuis, a law clerk who shares her taste for art, literature, poetry and music. His attentions draw comment, and she turns back to her husband and her baby, only to grow unhappy again, while the parish priest proves a poor listener. The womanizing landowner Rodolphe Boulanger wants an affair with her, and the riding lessons he arranges find her willing.
