Plot summary
Jackson, a punk poet and zine writer, wakes up after an orgy and goes to his job at Sam's alternative record store in Los Angeles. A call from the rock star Sonny Spike sends him to a hotel, where Sonny asks him to write lyrics for his next album. At the store, a customer named Derek declares his love at first sight. Jackson's cousin Jed, visiting from Iowa, is in the shower at Jackson's house. Jackson and Jed go back to the store, then out with Sam to a book signing by Kurt Domain, where Jackson runs into Billy, a man he met at the orgy. Jackson tells Billy he loves him at first sight, and Billy agrees to coffee but says he will not have sex with him.

- To infuse queerness into Luster as deeply as possible, writer-director Everett Lewis populated the cast with a number of LGBT actors and filled the soundtrack with music from LGBT punk and queercore bands, most notably Pansy Division.
- The poetry Jackson reads in Luster is the work of gay writer Dennis Cooper, and it includes the first poem Cooper ever wrote, about David Cassidy.
- In Luster, Jackson reads the film's final poem in voice-over over a solid blue screen, a reference and tribute to Derek Jarman's final film, Blue.
