Plot summary
Katlin Palmerston is a high school honors student who is thrilled by a ten-dollar lottery win. She and her best friend Cheryl Bemberg are saving for a trip to Amsterdam. At her birthday party, classmates play poker, and Katlin comes out ahead. She meets Ron Lunderman, an older brother of a classmate, at a casino. To fund the trip, Katlin begins following basketball and football and betting on the games. Her parents treat the new interest as a phase. Her mother, Valerie, suspects she is watching for boys, while her father, Alastair, warns her never to wager more than five dollars. The bets start to go wrong, and Katlin's losses grow. Debt mounts, and tension at home increases.
