Plot summary

Ben Keller and Lucy St. Martin work together and have known each other since childhood. He carries a torch for her that she does not return. Lucy is having an affair with a colleague, and when he calls it off she interrupts a company meeting to expose it and is fired. Pauline Keller, Ben's mother, telephones to summon him home for an emergency. The two leave together and share a ride; Ben flashes back to telling Lucy as a child that he loves her. At his house, camera crews and journalists ambush him: Pauline has discovered that his lottery ticket won a $36 million jackpot. Lucy hears the news on the radio, crashes the party his colleagues throw him, and engineers further meetings. A detective investigating several disappearances questions the neighbors, and Pauline invites Lucy along to a news interview.
