Plot summary
Roanoke Island, 1587, and the party of English settlers who come ashore finds the fort empty and one settler hanged inside a bolted building. Their governor, John White, calls it Spanish intimidation. White then sails to England for provisions and leaves his son-in-law Ananias Dare in charge, with George Howe beside him. Ananias's pregnant wife Eleanor wakes from a dream of her nightgown soaked in blood and her baby gone, and asks him to take the colony home; he refuses. Settlers die in the woods, crops fail and the forest holds no animals. Eleanor's dreams point to a supernatural presence on the island, and Ananias enlists Manteo, a Croatan chief, to help free the wraiths.
