Plot summary
Lily and Alison are best friends in a poverty-stricken town near the Salton Sea. Lily is rebellious, living with her single mother, Margaret, and wants to leave home; Alison is careful, lives with an alcoholic father, and escapes to her uncle Hogan's cars and horses. When skateboarders from Los Angeles visit, Lily is drawn to Jesse, who kisses her and writes his number on her arm. Lily persuades Alison to borrow Hogan's truck and drive to Los Angeles to find him. On the way, Lily steals goods at a convenience store, and when Alison is caught trying to return them, Lily gets her out of it. The girls reach the boys and Alison drives them to the apartment where they stay.

- James was originally working on an autobiographical project about him and his best friend joining a gang in Boston, with Justin Timberlake attached to play James and Nick Cassavetes to direct. Worried it would glamorize the violent lifestyle he had recently left behind, he wrote Little Birds instead, substituting two fifteen-year-old girls for himself and his friend.
- Kay Panabaker came on to the film just one week before filming, after the production had auditioned hundreds of actresses.
- James finished the film shortly before its screening at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and then had to attend a trial for his actions while he was part of Friends Stand United.
