Amos Jenkins is the only miner to come out of the accident alive, and he walks with a limp afterward. He lives with and looks after his aging father, Basil. Neighbors who depend on the mine for work ask him to stay silent about conditions underground, while the families of the men who died press him to join a lawsuit against the company. In the wealthier part of town, Bill Doyle, the mine's supervisor, faces an investigation into his role in the disaster. His wife Diana has lost her footing among the families she once socialized with. Owen Briggs, whose father died in the mine, babysits James, his younger brother, and tries to fit in with the richer boys, among them Bill and Diana's son, JT.
