Plot summary
Inside a spacecraft, Stu sits an abduction test. The student is a young green alien; the man he must carry off is Ernie, a farmer asleep in an isolated farmhouse. The examiner, Mr. B, watches with a neutral expression and gives no hints. The console holds thousands of identical switches, none labeled, and the task calls for a delicate touch. Stu works the controls hesitantly, and each attempt knocks Ernie into the walls of his bedroom without waking him. At first the window glass blocks the beam. Losing patience, Stu swipes at whole rows of switches, sending Ernie bouncing around the room while he sleeps on.

- Lifted's story came from Gary Rydstrom's own experience as a sound mixer, and how uncomfortable and difficult it is to operate large, complex equipment while lots of people watch and take notes.
- Lifted was the directorial debut of Gary Rydstrom, an Academy Award-winning sound designer, editor and mixer, and the first film produced by Katherine Sarafian, who went on to produce Pixar's Brave in 2012.
- Lifted used no large technological advances, only a new program called Jiggle, which let animators make chosen parts of a body resonate, controlled so it stayed within a limb or away from the face.
