Plot summary
Chanda is a poor twelve-year-old girl in a township near Johannesburg, where she lives with her mother, her stepfather, and her two younger half-siblings, Iris and Soly. Her baby half-sister, Sarah, has just died, and the funeral arrangements fall to Chanda. Her mother, Lillian, is a seamstress and is paralyzed by grief. Her stepfather, Jonah, is an alcoholic. Mrs. Tafa, who lives next door, helps look after the younger children. Chanda's friend Esther is an orphaned girl from her school who survives through prostitution. At Sarah's funeral, Jonah promises that he will support his family. Afterward, Mrs. Tafa takes the ailing Lillian to a quack doctor who cannot help her.
