Plot summary
Captain Ashland is on the last voyage of his cruise ship, with his replacement, Trevor Marshall, aboard and Marshall's wife Margaret and their children Robin and Ben traveling with him. Radar finds a black freighter that will not change course, and the two ships collide. Marshall, his family and a few others survive the sinking and spend the night on a piece of wreckage, where they pull the barely conscious Ashland from the water. Come daylight they see the black freighter and climb the ladder slung from its stern, not realizing it is the ship that rammed them. Below deck they find empty corridors, cobwebs and old memorabilia, and lights and hatches that work by themselves.

- The production found a disused tanker in Biloxi, Mississippi that was due to be scrapped, but its engine broke down after a single hour of filming and the ship had to be towed for the rest of the shoot.
- Jack Hill wrote the script, called Bloodstar and inspired by Steven Spielberg's Duel, and wanted to direct it himself, but the Canadian Film Development Corporation required a Canadian director for the production to qualify for tax credits, so he did not.
- The film's shipwreck sequences were assembled from footage originally shot for The Last Voyage (1960) and S.O.S. Titanic (1979).
