Plot summary
Rachel Heggie wakes from a nightmare in her cheap hotel room to find a raven feather in her bed, then leaves for her first night shift at a run-down police station in a Scottish town. On patrol she sees a speeding car hit a man, who vanishes from the road, and she arrests the driver, Caesar Sargison. At the station Sgt MacReady books Caesar for reckless driving while PCs Jennifer Mundie and Jack Warnock search for the man they hit. They bring him in mute, covered in scratches, with only a notebook listing names, and he is locked in a cell alongside Caesar's teacher, Ralph Beswick, held for beating his wife. Dr Duncan Hume is called to examine the stranger.
