Plot summary

An anthology of three stories. At a dance hall, a masked man dances with a young woman until he collapses from the effort, and a doctor is summoned. Under the mask the doctor finds the worn face of an older man, Ambroise. Ambroise's wife Denise tells the doctor that her husband once charmed the women who came to the hairdresser's salon where he worked, and that his looks left him within two years, so he now goes out disguised. In the second story, Julia Tellier, a respected madam in a small town, closes her brothel for a Saturday and takes her girls to her brother Joseph's village for the First Communion of her niece, Constance Rivet; the regular patrons arrive to find the door shut. In the third, the painter Jean falls in love with his model Joséphine.
