Plot summary
An illiterate seamstress has a powerful fetish for silk which gets her into trouble. The psychiatrist sent to help her becomes fascinated by her case and when he returns to France from World War One they fall in love, an affair that can only end in tragedy.

- The scenes meant to take place in a department store were in fact shot on weekends inside the central headquarters of Crédit lyonnais, only weeks before a fire almost completely destroyed the building.
- The film draws on the life and work of Gaëtan Gatian de Clérambault, a psychiatrist, ethnographer and photographer of the early 1900s who taught drapery at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris and took many photographs in Morocco between 1917 and 1920.
