Plot summary
Loosely based on folk fairy tales, the story centers on a man who is lazy, ignorant and tricky. He speaks with a speech disorder, likes beer, and often lands in ridiculous situations. He has a strict and authoritative wife, and she sends him into the forest to bring home a New Year tree. The winter forest he walks into is a magic place full of unexpected events.

- Actor Sadalsky's name was removed from the credits: shortly before the final cut he had been arrested in the Cosmos Hotel with a foreign citizen, and Gosteleradio director Sergei Lapin ordered the removal as a penalty for forbidden relations with foreigners.
- Censors suspected the film's absurd narration carried encoded messages to foreign intelligence, and director Alexander Tatarsky was told his hero insulted the image of the common Russian man; after he and Ivanov defended the line about being last in line for the Tsar position with scandals, the film was sent for revision.
- After its first showing on Central TV the film reached cult status, and the characters' aphoristic, absurdly humorous remarks turned into colloquial proverbs.
