Plot summary
The Dog has grown old on a Ukrainian farmstead, and the guarding he once did is beyond him. His masters have kept him on out of kindness, but when thieves take from the house at night and he gives no alarm, their patience runs out. They drive him from the yard, and he runs to the forest, where he is alone, hungry, homesick, and too slow to catch prey. There he meets the Wolf he used to chase off the farm, an animal with little of his own. The Wolf hears him out, and the two of them hatch a plan.
