Plot summary
In 1960 Moscow a stranger is rounding up dogs and taking them away. He chases Strelka, a terrier mix puppy, but she slips off with her friend, the rat Venya. At a circus, the pig Vova has grown too big for his rocket, so Belka, a Samoyed, flies in his place; she loses control and comes down on a pay phone where Venya is gathering coins. Belka, Strelka and Venya meet other strays, then the stranger catches them and puts them on a train to a Soviet space program training center at Baikonur. There Kazbek, a German Shepherd trainer, has to pick the two dogs for the flight.

- Before its official release, the film was watched aboard the International Space Station by cosmonauts Maxim Suraev and Oleg Kotov, who praised it for its space detail; the first audience on Earth was their wives and children.
- The circus persona of Belka was modelled on Lyubov Orlova's circus artist in the 1936 feature film Circus, and director Svyatoslav Ushakov visited the Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, which served as the prototype of Belka's circus.
- The film is based on the Soviet space dogs Belka and Strelka, who in August 1960 became the first animals to survive an orbital space trip, aboard Korabl-Sputnik 2.
