Plot summary
The Prince of Kiev learns that his niece, Zabava, loves a simple messenger named Yelisey and intends to run away with him. To keep them apart, the prince orders Yelisey to carry a message to the bogatyr Dobrynya Nikitich about tribute owed by Khan Becket of the Crimea, and insists that Yelisey go along. The prince also urges Zabava to marry, presenting suitors she refuses. Dobrynya takes the tribute from the khan by force and frees Yelisey, who had been taken prisoner. When Zabava vanishes from Kiev, the prince turns down Dobrynya's offer to search for her; Dobrynya and Yelisey ride out anyway.
