Plot summary
Being the youngest child in a Swedish family leaves Malysh on his own much of the day. He is seven, and what he wants most is a dog, and no dog has arrived. So he invents the friend he does not have, and that friend is a small man with a propeller on his back who comes flying in through the open window of his room and announces himself as Karlson, who lives on the roof.

- Vasily Livanov got the voice of Carlson by chance: he was visiting the studio to play chess, and when director Boris Stepanov complained he still had no lead, Livanov offered to try. Many others had auditioned for the part, including Alexey Gribov.
- For Carlson's ghost attack on the thieves the film uses an uncredited melody: Merv Griffin's "House of Horrors" (1962), performed by the Charles Grean Orchestra as a twist-rhythm arrangement of melodies from Saint-Saëns's Danse Macabre and Chopin's funeral march.
- Livanov's improvised recording in the studio pleased the whole team, and he played Carlson as an impersonation of the famous film director Grigory Roshal.
- The cartoon holds a technical first for Soviet animation: the article credits it with the first use of electrography in Soviet animation.
