Plot summary
Pentagram, a doom metal band from Alexandria, Virginia, was founded in 1971 and stayed active on and off for four decades, without ever reaching a mass audience. Its lead singer, Bobby Liebling, is in his fifties at the film's outset, addicted to drugs and living in his parents' basement. After the heavy metal underground rediscovers the band's early music, his friend and manager Sean Pelletier sets out to help him beat the addiction and leave the old life behind. Footage was shot over the four years from 2006 to 2010, and the film follows the singer and the people around him through that period.

- Co-directors Fenton and Argott were not sure a documentary could result when they began filming Bobby Liebling; Fenton said Liebling seemed likely to "smoke himself to death in his parents' basement". They saw potential only once he began to recover.
- Fenton said that because Bobby Liebling's life changed so fast, the directors had to finesse those rapid shifts so viewers would not be left confused, and tried to balance the multiple sides of Liebling that he showed.
