Plot summary
In Yugoslavia, a young Katarina sings in a Christmas choir while her parents Petra and Ivan and her older sister Marta watch. Years later she lives in London, calls herself Kate, and works as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop whose owner goes by Santa, and she has grown distant from her family. She bounces between her friends' places and one singing audition goes badly. Outside the store she meets Tom Webster, a cycle courier, and his observations about London charm her. He spends time at a homeless shelter, which she first mocks, and he vanishes for days at a time. Kate goes looking for him and starts helping at the shelter.
