Plot summary
Lars Lindstrom keeps to the converted garage behind the house his older brother Gus and Gus's wife Karin share in a small town. His mother died giving birth to him, and touching other people is hard for him; Karin's attempts to draw him out and the friendliness of a co-worker named Margo come to little. One evening Lars tells Gus and Karin that he has met a woman online, Bianca, a wheelchair-using missionary of Brazilian and Danish descent. What arrives is a life-size doll, and Lars treats her as a person. Alarmed, Gus and Karin take Bianca to Dagmar Berman, the town doctor, who also works as a psychologist, and she urges Lars to bring Bianca back for weekly treatments. Lars introduces Bianca around town as his girlfriend.
