Plot summary
On a camping trip, a forest troll attacked Jack Brooks's family, and the boy hid while his parents and sister were killed. The memory left the grown Jack with a temper he cannot control, a psychotherapist who gets nowhere, a girlfriend named Eve who has run out of patience, and night classes he barely follows. Jack earns his living as a plumber, and Professor Crowley, his teacher, asks him to clear an obstruction in the pipes of a house the professor has just bought. The job fails, Jack is hurt, and digging in the backyard turns up a buried box. Old Howard, at the hardware store, warns Jack that the house is cursed and that nothing good comes of going near it.
